Having watched the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lScAz3-3HM) of the research performed down the estuary I have started to look at the bedrock a bit more. Normally it is hard to see much due to all the silt but today the rain had cleared a lot of it off the rocks.
I may want to be seeing foot or paw prints but these do look like them and also they are set into the rock.
Taking a look at animal paw prints the closest I think these look like are the rear paw prints of a brown bear. Brown bears did exist in the UK so it is more than possible.
Human prints?
Tenuous to say the least but there is some heel shape to be seen.
Deer Prints?
Also there are a number of other hoof prints in the area. Could be the local cow population but unlikely as these prints were covered in 2-3m of soil until the recent erosion and they look a bit like deer prints. Given red deer used to roam further down the coast around Newport it is feasible that they could well be Red Deer prints;
Again worth remembering that this softer mud section has only been exposed in the last 5 years as the erosion has taken away over 10-20 meters of shore line in this spot alone. Sadly as of 05.07.19 the tracks have ben destroyed by the cows gaining access to the area. Big shame.
The following shots show the softer compacted much and the shore line that has receded.
The following image shows the amount of silt normally covering this rocky area so was super lucky to have come across the marks.
